A little bit about who we are and our history
I’m Sue Marsh and, alongside my husband Philip, we’re the proud owner-operators of Matai Electrical / Betta Electrical.
We’re a generational family business. My grandfather, Hector Julian, founded the business back in 1946. My Father, Pat Julian, went to work as an apprentice before purchasing the business in 1974, with Hec retiring in 1976 to head overseas for a well-deserved holiday! In 2010 the business was purchased by Philip and I and renamed Matai Electrical – more to do with where we’re located than the tree!
The business has evolved quite a bit over the years. Not only are we retailers, but offer full contracting, servicing, and repair work.
Keeping it in the family
So delighted that our youngest son Adam has decided to join us as an electrical apprentice... with Adam now a Dad himself, who knows what the future will hold? Perhaps we will reach five generations as a family business. Our eldest son, Simon, also works with us at Hammer, so we definitely are a fully fledged family business.
We also run a Hammer Hardware, a NZ Post and Kiwibank Franchise, with Ravensdown Urea Silos on site, which means we have a large range of products and services to support the Inglewood area. This makes for a very busy retail environment, and lots of lovely customers, some of whom are 3rd generation customers. A lot of our loyal customers come in for a hammer and end up buying a new fridge!
We also stock a great range of small appliances. You could say we’re your one-stop-shop!
Community connection
Our community and our loyal customers are integral to our success which is why giving back to the community is high on our priority list. We’re a sponsor for the Inglewood Croquet Club, and we regularly support local community events and sports clubs who need assistance. We’re all about promoting 'shop local’ – this is essential for a town of our size and for the continuity of sales and service for all the local businesses.
